  • Rudo y Cursi heads to Tribeca
Posted By Heather | On Apr 22, 2009 | Filed Under: News & Rumors

The 2009 Tribeca Film Festival starts today and Rudo y Cursi will be among the films screened. The story is about two bumbling half-brothers from the sticks who both get signed to play for rival soccer clubs in Mexico City. Models, fast cars, gambling, drug-use, pet monkeys, cup-o-noodle, sibling rivalry and vanity singing careers all ensue from there.

During the Festival, the Apple Store (Soho) will be hosting film events, one of which will include Diego Luna, Gael Garcia and Carlos Cuarón on April 27, 2009.

And good news for the Spanish speaking impaired! Sony Classics has launched a Rudo y Cursi website in English! You can check out a new trailer with English subtitles here.

Also, here’s a video from the press conference Gael did with Diego Luna for Ambulante in January 2009 (Mexico City).

Gael: one of the 50 people that move Mexico
Posted By Heather | On Apr 1, 2009 | Filed Under: News & Rumors and Picture Gallery

Quién Magazine has nominated Gael as one of the 50 people that move Mexico.

During 2008, the Charolastra’s career continued to ascend. He released Déficit, his first movie as director, and connected his first hit Billboard song “Quiero que me quieras”, the adaptation of the original song by Cheap Trick, “I want you to want me” and one of the subjects of the movie Rudo y Cursi. Gael was versatile last year. He presented the staging of the play “Together”, participated at the Rome Film Festival and formed part of the actors movement made up of actors looking to create awareness about energy reform. All this, while waiting with Argentine actress Dolores Fonzi for the arrival of their son Lázaro who was born in Madrid, Spain, this past January.

In other news, Gael arrived in Mexico City the other day (from Madrid) with Dolores and baby Lazaro. Gael was all smiles and took photos with those present using their cell phones. source

Film pays price for Stevie Wonder gag
Posted By Heather | On Mar 29, 2009 | Filed Under: News & Rumors

City of God director Fernando Meirelles has revealed he paid the price for letting Gael Garcia Bernal spoof a Stevie Wonder song in his new film Blindness. The Babel actor spontaneously broke into one of Stevie’s hits during a break in fliming and the director decided to use the footage in the film.

“They charged us 50,000 US dollars so it was a very expensive joke but we paid,” said Fernando.

He continued: “We were waiting to shoot the scene where Gael was supposed to talk into the microphone to threaten everybody. Before doing that he had the microphone in his hand and just for fun he started playing it up as Stevie Wonder, I thought it was funny and that we could shoot it.”

The director added: “He started singing the song as a joke, I wasn’t sure I was going to use it but we were all laughing a lot and finally I decided to use the joke.” source

In case you don’t know, Stevie Wonder is blind. That’s the joke. Here is a screen capture I made of Gael (the King of Ward 3) singing Stevie Wonder’s “I just called to say I love you” over the intercom. He even forgets the words. It’s hilarious!
