“Letters to Juliet” to close beach film festival

The Newport Beach Film Fest will open April 22 with the world premiere of “Five Star Day,” starring Cam Gigandet and Jena Malone. Fest closes April 29 with “Letters to Juliet,” starring Amanda Seyfried. “Letters to Juliet” is directed by Gary Winick and co-stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Vanessa Redgrave.

Untitled Cesar Chavez Project

Plans to bring the life of the founder of the United Farm Workers to the big screen are in the final stages, according to members of Cesar Chavez’s family, and the foundation that bears his name.

According to “The Hollywood Report,” the film about the famed Mexican American civil rights leader and labor activist will be made by Mexico-based Canana Films, owned by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna.

The screenwriters for the film are already in place, according to Manuel Bernal, vice president of the Cesar Chavez Foundation told EFE.

Gael to present “Resist”

Bernal debuts with Deficit

Acclaimed actor Gael Garcia Bernal has spent time on both sides of the camera for his latest movie.

The Mexican heart-throb shot to fame with performances in Y Tu Mama Tambien, Amores Perros and the Motorcycle Diaries.

Bernal focusses on the social problems of his homeland in Deficit, which marks his directorial debut.

He also stars in the low-budget film, set at a party at the holiday retreat of a wealthy Mexican family.

It was something of a gamble but the film has just been released commercially in Mexico and is set to be distributed around the world after getting rave reviews.
