MTV Movies Blog writes that Gael will be in a new movie titled “Letters to Juliet”. Here’s the article.
_____________

I’m beginning to think the gang over at Summit Entertainment has a thing for star-crossed lovers. As you know, they’re the studio that’s bringing you so much “Twilight,” as well as Robert Pattinson’s “Remember Me.” Now they’ve moved on to that other famous young couple, Romeo and Juliet.

According to Variety, they have recruited Amanda Seyfried, Gael Garcia Bernal, Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero to star in “Letters to Juliet.”

“Letters” is loosely based on the book by Lise and Ceil Friedman, which collects the real-life letters sent to William Shakespeare’s Juliet. Though she sprang entirely from Shakespeare’s imagination, Verona legend has assigned her a home, a tomb, and a balcony that is popular destination for visitors and weddings. Letters have been sent to Juliet since the Victorian era, but they’ve increased over the years, particularly whenever a new film adaptation comes out. She’s become a bit of a saint to the lovelorn, who write to her begging for sympathy and advice.

The film, which will be directed by Gary Winick (”Bride Wars”), naturally needs a bit more story to go with it. This re-imagining of “Letters” centers on a young couple (Seyfried and Bernal) who take a trip to Italy and accidentally receive a letter meant for Juliet. It’s from a woman (Redgrave) searching for the Italian man who she enjoyed a romance with in her youth. Seyfried’s character takes it upon herself to reunite the long lost couple, and combs Italy looking for the woman’s other half, played by Nero. Movie art will imitate real life, as Nero and Redgrave are a real life couple; they met while playing Lancelot and Guinevere (another pair of star-crossed lovers!) in the 1967 adaptation of “Camelot.”

The film begins production on June 25 in Italy.

Well, hell! The site was down for a few days. The server had some major problems but the gals that run it were able to help me out, yet again. Thanks Luciana and Gertie!

It appears Gael will be attending the Edinburgh Film Festival later this month. Thanks to Simon for this bit of news!

—————

Actors Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna and director Carlos Cuarón are set to grace the red carpet for the premiere of Rudo & Cursi, reuniting the trio eight years after Y Tu Mamá También.

Y Tu Mamá También was significant of a new era for Mexican cinema when it was released in 2001, launching the international careers of director Alfonso (Children of Men) Cuarón and actors Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna.

Alfonso wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay with his brother Carlos, who steps behind the camera for the first time with Rudo & Cursi.

With the quartet reuniting – Alfonso is in the producer’s chair on this occasion – it’s no surprise that the film has already won high praise around the globe. The comedy follows the eponymous brothers’ rise to soccer stardom, from poverty to penthouses.

Critic Roger Ebert was unequivocal in his praise of the movie, calling it, “the sort of high-level buddy movie every national cinema needs.”

The appearance of award-winning actor Bernal at the Edinburgh Film Festival is sure to set a few pulses racing, as much for his looks as his prodigious talent. Co-star Luna will be just as recognisable to audiences, following his apperarances in Milk, The Terminal and Open Range.

There are still a few tickets left, so don’t miss the chance to hear Cuarón, Bernal and Luna discussing the film at the exclusive Q&A following the Gala Premiere on 21 June.

Rudo & Cursi is screening on 21 and 24 June at Cineworld. source

Outstanding Latin actors Benicio Del Toro and Gael García Bernal will carry out a new film by director Martin Scorsese. The film titled Silence is based on the homonymous novel of Shusaku Endo, whose cinematographic adaptation is being written by scriptwriter Jay Cocks.

Puerto Rican Del Toro and Mexican Bernal will play two Jesuit bishops during the 17th century that are introduced clandestinely in Japan in order to find their teacher and promote the education of Christian writings. The recording of Silence could begin by the end of this year in New Zealand.

May 5, 2009 – Cinema Blend Article

Here in the States, we think of Gael Garcia Bernal as a kind of art house star, a figure in movies like Y Tu Mama Tambien and Blindness. But in his native Mexico, not only is he a major actor, but also, somehow, a rock star — kinda. At the roundtable interviews for his new film Rudo y Cursi, both Bernal and director Carlos Cuaron explained how the song that Bernal’s character records in the film has become a hit ringtone in Mexico.

“Gael’s Quiero Que Me Quieras [Spanish version of I Want You To Want Me] became also a big hit, especially ringtone downloads,” Cuaron explained, referencing the music video recorded by Bernal’s character in hopes of becoming a huge star. “People are singing it on the street. The social impact that it has created is weird. ”

Bernal added, “I was very surprised that the song became such a big hit, and it transcended into other things. The song is better known now with the film.” source

Gael Garcia Bernal & Diego Luna Interview on Cinemablend

There have been more famous onscreen duos in screen history, and even some of them have been friends in real life, but few are as fun to watch together as Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal. The two broke into stardom in 2001’s Y Tu Mama Tambien, when both were around 21. Now in their 30s, with families of their own, they’ve reunited for Rudo y Cursi, a dramedy about two brothers from a rural community who become soccer superstars, each handling fame in equally poor ways.

Luna and Bernal walked into the roundtable interview dressed alike– I swear to God– though I don’t know if it was on purpose. Ribbing each other and occasionally translating each others Spanish, they talked about returning to acting after making their own films, their continuing partnership through Canana Films, and which one of them would win in a penalty kick.
