Monday night, the Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal participated at the presentation in the Yara theater of his first film as a director, “Déficit”, which was outside the contest of the festival.
The charismatic actor, very well known in Havana for his works in González Iñárritu (Amorres Perros, Babel), Alfonso Cuarón (Y tu mama también), Carlos Race (El crimen del Padre Amaro) and Walter Salles films (Motorcycle diaries), said some words to a very enthusiastic public, who applauded at his arrival.
“13 or 14 years ago I was in a summer course at the San Antonio school. I always wanted to be an actor, but in my innocent imagination I never dreamed I could ever be a filmmaker and at some point be present here, in this Festival, in this theatre, where I had seen so many films”, he said.
He described Déficit as “an organic, endemic” film and was thankful to the Festival and the ICAIC for the invitation to participate at the event, as well to his friend Diego Luna, who helped him to produce the film and was also present in the Havana for his film J.C. Chávez (in competition for the Best Documentary).
